So, the issue wasn't so much the inclusion of a ballad as much as it was the inclusion of what could be perceived as a "love song".
Metallica had ballads on their albums before, but I think it should be specified that this was a "love ballad" or at least a more typical one, as Metallica's ballads before this dealt with far more serious issues than "missing your girlfriend" (Sanitarium was about insanity, Fade to Black was about suicide, and One was based on the novel Johnny Got His Gun).
